I have started a new journal. I may or may not copy the text to here still, but the journal site is: http://journals.worldnomads.com/treezy/So I'm on the road! After an incredible last day at work (think balloons, streamers, ponchos and a surprise lunch with every staff member making a dish inspired by South America), I had a traditional Fish n Chip meal with part of my tribe and flew to Wellington (Kim I did email you ages ago about staying with you, but never heard back so stayed at my auntie's instead) This was a whirlwind stop, and the next day we went to Grandma's in Wanganui. It was good to see her, and then I flew up to AUckland, on the smallest plane imaginable. So small it only had one seat on either side, and you could see the pilot piloting! The novety soon wore off however, when I realised that small planes mean louder noises and more turbulence. But it was ok. Got to Auckland without a hitch and had lunch with my lovely friend Hannah before making it up to my sister's house in Whangaparaoa. Tomorrow the journey begins for real. I'm a little nervous and a lot excited. I'm sure the journal entries will get more exciting once I've taken off and I sure hope that the flight to Argentina is in a bigger plane! Don't think that I could handle being in that little plane for a twelve hour stretch. Being me, I do hope that there are lots of good movies for me to watch! I never sleep on planes, just enjoy the plane food (am I the only person in the world that LOVES it?) and the movies, and generally being waited on hand and foot. Let's just hope that my luggage also makes it.. | | Sunday, February 22nd, 2009 | | 11:26 pm |
South America!!
So the big news from me is that I have booked my tickets to South America! I leave on May 12th from Auckland, and fly back to Auckland 6 months later. I am flying in to Buenos Aires, and then the tentative plan is to make my way round parts of the continent, through Argentina, chile, Peru, ecuador, Bolivia and Brazil before making a circle back to Buenos Aires in time for my flight. I intend to be travelling on the cheap and will be doing significant amounts of volunteering and couchsurfing, but it still won't be cheap. I am hoping to do a language course when I get there, I want to walk the Inca Trail up to Machu Picchu (must get waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay fitter than I am)and some other cool stuff like seeing Iguazu falls, the Amazon and the salt lakes. I am so excited, and have been obsessively reading up on every aspect that I can think of about it since I paid for my tickets. I am going on my own. Anyone that has been and has tips for me, it would be greatly appreciated. particularly on the Inca Trail, as that books up so quickly I have to get on to that pretty soon. Also have to get vaccinations pretty soon too, and they will cost a whole whack of money. Planning this trip has made me feel so alive again. I have been back in Christchurch a little under 2 years, and while I have had little trips, I haven't done anything this exciting for ages....actually I've NEVER done something this exciting. My 2 year itch seems to be rearing it's ugly head though. Haven't stayed in a city longer than 2 years as an adult since I first trekked across the ditch to Melbourne for my two year stint there. Followed by 2 years back in Christchurch finishing my degree, then two years in Europe, this last two years has actually made me like Christchurch again. But I need to travel. I just have to. I don't think I'll ever stop. But it's not for long this time. At this stage anywayy. | | Sunday, February 1st, 2009 | | 11:38 pm |
Buskers
Spent the day watching Buskers today. They were fantastic (mostly) and incredibly skilled and talented. There is, however a series of generic busker patter that myself and my friend decided would make a very good busking drinking game for next year's shows: Take a drink if the busker says: "I've tried this trick before...on my second try I'll get it right!" (to an audience volunteer) stand over here, on the bloodstain from my last show (to an annoying heckler) "how bout I come into your room tonight and mess with your performance?" (to a volunteer that is going to throw something to them) "if you miss then there are 2 more coming right back at you" (after a fairly adult joke) "don't worry the kids don't get it. if they do...you're bad parents" (to a child) "if Mummy doesn't give you $20 to give to the nice man, that means they don't love you" (regarding how much to give) "just fold it up..." "take out a $20 note, and then place your wallet in my hat" "Don't worry, I'm a professional...idiot" "of all the audiences I have ever had you have been the most recent" "kids don't try this at home...try it at school" "the exit sign is here (points to hat)" I'm sure there are heaps more...anyone got any? don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore the Buskers Festival. i think it adds vibrancy and colour to Christchurch, but these jokes get a little tired. My favourite acts this year were: Russian Bar trio. This chick is PHENOMENAL! http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=FsuUvYtz4s0Space cowboy - sword swallowing extraordinaire http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=rtJjxSk88z0Bendy Em - Body contortionist http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=YPKy1FJX4gQ&feature=relatedSlackwire Sam - unicycles and juggle over a slackwire in a very non-chalantly way http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=Qsltg5aYjtYSam Wills - same show as last year, but he is really an amazingly polished performer and is from Timaru so that's cool http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=g2w7koTrtDchttp://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3ldZ8YRWGc&NR=1Fuse Circus - this is actually a video from last year's show which I thought was better than this years but they were still amazing this year http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=Rkorxehvt6g | | Tuesday, January 20th, 2009 | | 4:53 pm |
Recently we have had something occur in New Zealand which I am disgusted about. http://www.odt.co.nz/news/national/39924/second-cafe-takes-stand-against-israelBasically these 2 cafe owners banned Israelis from their cafe, saying that it was their personal protest against Israel's actions in Gaza. This really upset me, as this is major discrimination. Take this line of thought and we would be banning every single nationality for their actions in some event in some point in history. You are entitled to your own opinion but don't take it against the people from that country. They are innocent. It is the government that you should be protesting against, and this kind of protest does nothing except antagonise tourists and tourism in an already suffering industry and show your ignorance. Ok, rant over! | | Sunday, January 4th, 2009 | | 9:46 am |
Scott and Andrea's wedding was yesterday, and it was amazing! It started off for me quite early, being the bridesmaid. We went to this boutique hotel, and spent the day getting pampered. For me it was quite an experience. Hair, makeup, fingernail and toenail polish, and lots of girly talk. I actually really enjoyed it despite not being the least bit girlie. Anyway, the weather started off ok, but just as we got into the taxis to go to the venue, it started hailing. Hailing! Very dramatic entances were had by all! Anyway, they got married in a theatre which was just perfect for them, and the ceremony was just beautiful and I couldn't stop grinning while I was up there, and also because I could see Scott who was looking at Andrea with such love in his eyes, it was just amazing! Speaking of amazing, Andrea looked like a fairytale princess, she was so beautiful!!! After the ceremony, there was milling and champagne for a bit, then the bridal party went off for photos which was fun. Then to the reception, where being on the high table we got served! Very exciting. The speeches were really good, and the whole day was just amazing! congratulations Scott and Andrea! | | Thursday, January 1st, 2009 | | 7:32 am |
Ok, so since I appear to be in a writing mood, I will do the usual reflection stuff you're supposed to do on a day like today. 2008 was an ok year. In many ways it was fantastic. I had a wondeful and meaningful relationship with a wonderful woman, and I'm glad that I had that experience with her, although sad that it didn't work out. Although not a travel year, I managed to have quite a few wee holidys. 5 days in the south of the south island, seeing Milford and Doubtful Sounds which was amazing, 10 days in Melbourne, a couple of wee stays in Kaikoura, one to go swimming with the dolphins and whale watching and one to go to Sea Fest and get ridiculously drunk, a little birthday jaunt to Hanmer Springs which was just lovely, a wee trip up to the top of the north island, seeing the Coromandel and many other parts of the North island for the first time, and a recently a wee 2 week road trip over to the West Coast and then up to Abel Tasman and Nelson, where in Abel I sea kayaked which was just incredible. So not bad at all really when you list it like that! Work was great in some ways and horrible in others. I have learnt so much this year with the owners being away for 6 months, and have developed a lot in many skills that it is probably very useful to possess. I've come a long way in the managing staff side of things, which is a good skill but on the whole I still think I prefer being "one of the gang" rather than "the boss". I turned 28, which is historically supposed to be when you have a mini crisis about what you are going to do with your life!. I sort of had this, but not too bad. I've accepted that I'll never walk the traditional career and relationship path and I'm actually ok with this. 2008 also saw me getting into fitness and loving it, which is good! Go aqua aerobics! So onto 2009. I'm going to travel. Not necessarily anywhere exotic but I need to get on the road again! I'm also wanting to focus on my health a lot more and get back into optimum shape and fitness. So, bring it on. I like new years. They always focus you into seeing what you want to achieve and puts you back on the right path. (well they do for me anyway) Happy New Year everyone! | | 7:21 am |
Well, several people have been commenting recently on the lack of any kind of information on here. I haven't felt like I've got anything much to say. So, 3 months has passed. Anything new to report? I'm bridesmaid at my brother's wedding on Saturday which I am looking forward to immensely. I'm still working, managing the backpackers although my itchy feet are screaming too much, so travel is on the cards again for April next year again. I'm single, and have been since mid August (can't remember if I posted that). It was really difficult at the time, but we are getting to be quite good friends now which is all good. Other than that, I've been passing the time doing the usual boring day to day life things. I'm sure some interesting stuff has occurred since I last wrote, but I'm damned if I can remember what it was! I'm sure once I get back on the road, I'll become more interesting again. | | Friday, September 26th, 2008 | | 11:51 am |
Job Vacancy
Anyone looking for a partime job working for me at the Jailhouse Backpackers (www.jail.co.nz). Or alternatively know someone that needs a part time job? The hours would be 24 hours per week (Friday afternoon 1-6 and Sat and Sun (9-6). It would help that you have done something of this sort before, but I'll train you up, so no real need. Must know Christchurch well though, and be a people person. Contact me on treezy@gmail.com for more info. Cheers | | Friday, August 1st, 2008 | | 8:40 pm |
It's been a month, and I haven't posted in here. 2 months exactly since I wrote anything relating to my actual life. In part, it has been because I haven't had a computer at home and I have been ridiculously busy at work. Also in part, I have felt I have nothing to say. And in part, cos i haven't been bothered. So what's new? Well, first of all I have a lovely sparkly new lap top so I can now play on the internet to my heart's content. Particularly excited about this whole broadband thing, and being able to be on the internet at the same time as my flatmate(and my other flatmate can talk on the phone!) Wow, technology is amazing! (yeah I know wireless has been around for a while, I'm just not so good with all of that stuff. I used to be 10 years ago. But now I am part of a whole other generation that doens't understand. I finally get why my parents had so much trouble understanding the internet. :) Work is going pretty good on the whole. It has been a bit stressful, but I'm getting there. Lyn, my girlfriend and I are still going strong and it is going really well. It has been about 4 months now, so that is all good. I'm back living in my flat in Hagley Ave, so that's all good. Socialising wise, I have become a bit of a hermit again. I'd love to catch up with people again though, if anyone wanted. It's Film Festival time, and although I don't intend to see anywhere near as many as last year (47 in 2 weeks) I should be able to get to a few. The ones I have picked so far, have been fantastic though. Opening night was "Man on Wire" which was a fantastic opener and we had Jazz singing and circus performers. Two annoying things happened yesterday though. First thing was coming out into the foyer which was filled with people and I had a panic/claustrophobia attack really badly. In fact i haven't had one that bad for a while. It was awful. I ran into the office and hid in a corner for 20 minutes with a juice and so by the time I got into the theatre I was much better. Also in the theatre, as good as the film was, I was distracted by this idiot of a woman texting her friend throughout the film. Can people not sit through a film without checking their phone!? Does anybody else do this, cos it is bloody annoying for other people in the theatre. Anyway, that will do for catch up. How are you guys? Remember, anyone that wants to catch up, gimme a yell (may not be able to be until after film festival, but we'll make a plan!) | | Sunday, June 1st, 2008 | | 11:09 am |
Why is it that we celebrate Queen's birthday, and England doesn't? | | 10:58 am |
Had a weekend of Scriptless this weekend. Friday night, me and Lyn went to the normal one, and it was Ladies night and was very good on the whole. Last night my friend had gotten us free tickets to Scriptless Uncut so we went along to that. It was an interesting idea, but personally I felt that the first half didn't gel, as the scenes were mainly very short, and in some cases too short to really build up a momentum, as they were just two lines. I liked the idea of the Oscars though, and there were some nice bits in the first half. it didn't help the actors that there was this idiot yelling out really rude and stupid things (he was sitting in front of me and I just wanted to smack him!) The second half however (and luckily the idiot didn't come back in) was excellent. It was one long scene, and I guess that gave it more potential to go tits up, but it was really good. I know that different nights would make different shows; I've been to enough improvised theatre by now to know that. So yeah, glad I went. Expected it to be slightly different, but it was pretty good. | | Thursday, May 29th, 2008 | | 8:39 am |
North Islandy goodness
I went up to the North island last week for a few days. The company Stray (hop on hop off bus tours) flew me up, and I joined the bus in Auckland, to see what it was all about. I had also never been to most of the places. First, we went to Hahei in the Coromandel, and then to Raglan, then to Waitomo where I did caving and toobing, and then to Maketu, where we were welcomed on to a marae and ate a hangi and learnt the poi and haka (because it was all their family it made it way more authentic and the best maori experience thing I have seen aimed at tourists). Finally we went to Rotorua, where I jumped off the bus and took another up to Auckland. Hung out with some friends and my sis, which was great. Back to work this morning. If you want to see photos, I have updated some on my facebook. It was a great little trip, and the weather was stunning. | | Sunday, May 11th, 2008 | | 10:38 pm |
Continuing the fantastic theme of supporting local talent, I attended Luke Di Somma's "Get Luke to New York" tribute concert tonight, aptly named Christchurch to Broadway. http://www.getluketonewyork.co.nz/ The level of talent was fantastic, and there was a great drama and musical theatre turnout from people that I knew, but more importantly knew Luke. He is going to go far that boy. My fave parts of the night were the tap dancing boys, Pandemonium, The Fiend songs (particularly "I can't wait), and Ross Gumbley as MC was perfect. Actually it was just a damn good show, and Luke certainly deserved his standing ovation from most of the crowd. | | 5:31 pm |
I had a fantastic evening last night. I went to the Premiere of "Through Rainbow Coloured Glasses" http://www.throughrainbowcolouredglasses.co.nz/ and you can see the fantastic trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xoBKlDvORk. Filmed entirely in Christchurch, about Christchurch gay and lesbian history, with local interviews (many of whom were people I knew) and made by local people, the evening was a red carpet, glam and black tie event which I'd been looking forward to for a while. And the film was great! I really thought on the whole it was very well put together, and it got a standing ovation in our cinema for the directors (who were also in our cinema). If you want to see this film, it is playing at the Regent on Worcester, twice this week, Tuesday and Thursday night at I think 8pm. Give them a call for the specifics. It is well worth a watch though, and I'm not sure if it will get a general release so it could be your only chance to see it on the big screen. | | Friday, May 2nd, 2008 | | 8:37 am |
So, a little update I guess. Work's going well. Still really enjoying it, although it is about to become an even bigger challenge as the owners are going to Spain for SIX MONTHS. Lucky for some. House wise, I have found a house sitting place for a couple of months. It is such a nice place and it will allow me to live by myself much more cheaply than I could have ever afforded. All good. I've also recently started seeing an amazing woman a few weeks ago. It's early days yet, but she's pretty fantastic. I also just went up to Kaikoura last weekend. I went whale watching and dolphin swimming, and while they were great, I got horrendously seasick on both trips. | | Friday, April 11th, 2008 | | 8:23 am |
Ok, so I've been given notice by my friend that she is coming back from overseas and I'll need to move. I wasn't expecting her to come back til November, but in recent times she has been getting homesick so I was expecting the email when it came. It's been great living here. I haven't had to worry about furniture as I used hers while she was gone (a good solution for both of us). I also love my flatmates and the location which I'll sorely miss. But I see it as an excuse to try living by myself for a while. I've never done it so we'll see how we go. I'll need to buy some stuff like a bed, couch and some other essentials, but it should be good. Now I just have to find a place. I've got 5 weeks though, so it's ok. | | Sunday, April 6th, 2008 | | 10:31 am |
So I have been back at work for 5 days, and now I am sick. I think it was a combination of being totally relaxed my body getting a shock to coming back to work and working long hours again, to something going around, to not being used to being around so many people again. In any case, I started feeling a little sick on Friday day, went to a work thing on Friday night and felt absolutely awful there, woke up feeling crap, but went into work to relieve the night guy, and then Kirsty came in and took over from me so I could crash out in bed. I feel a little better this morning, but should probably still be in bed. I have a shift at Rialto though, so we'll see how that goes. Part of me hates being sick on my weekend (not that I really have one anyway) because it's my time. But I also hate relying on people, so at least I don't have to find cover and stuff. I tend to be a bit of a martyr when I'm sick. I kind of turn into superwoman pretending that I can still do everything (like turning up to work yesterday). In fact, if Kirsty hadn't rung and asked how I was, I would have soldiered on all day probably. But she heard straight away how I sounded and she said she was coming in. We'll see how I get on today. | | Tuesday, March 25th, 2008 | | 3:47 pm |
So I've arrived back to Melbourne after a magical weekend at Confest in the AUstralian rural countryside. For those that don't know what Confest is, I've copied this off the website: "Workshops, play shops, singing, dancing, discussions, tai chi, yoga, jamming, alternative technology, vegetarian market, fire twirling, circus skills, meditations, walking, swimming and more. You may have some skill or thoughts you'd like to share with others. Create your own workshop. Advertise it on the workshop boards. ConFest is as much you as it is any other person. Be free to just do your own thing. Create or join with a village that is your flavour." It is an amazing collection of wonderful, open minded people and I had some really beautiful connections with people, and insights into myself. I also started singing again (I damaged my voice a year ago and have completely lost all confidence to sing since then). My voice is lower and huskier and the range is less, but it still has kept the quality in it. I want to re train my voice to get the range again, but it was great to be jamming and singing again. So I have another week of being in Melbourne, and then I arrive back to ChCh next MOnday night. | | Wednesday, March 19th, 2008 | | 10:11 pm |
i'm in melbourne! It is so great to catch up with some of my friends, and there are plenty more to see. I am here for 11 days but with all the people I know, I'm not even sure that it will be enough time! I have more friends in Melbourne than I do in Christchurch. It is definitely my second home, but I'm not sure if I ever could live here again. I also had the most amazing time down south. Went on some wonderful cruises on Doubtful Sounds and Milford Sounds, spent a bit of time in Te Anau and drove home via Oamaru for a night (amazing hostel there which I definitely will return to!) and also spent a few hours in Dunedin with one of my oldest friends, Fiona which was great. It was a bit rushed but great. | | Thursday, March 13th, 2008 | | 6:05 pm |
I'm officially on holiday for the next few weeks! Hoorah! I'm driving to Queenstown tomorrow, and then off to Te Anau for wonderful, exciting and (mostly free) cruises on Milford and Doubtful Sounds, including an overnight in the latter. I'm also seeing Glowworms in Te Anau and Penguins in Oamaru before coming back to ChCh to catch a flight to Melbourne. I'm going to Confest, the cool hippy thing I have been to a couple of times before, and just hanging out with my friends. It is going to rock! |
